What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring, colorless, odorless radioactive gas formed by the decay of uranium in soil and rocks. This gas can infiltrate into enclosed spaces, accumulating to dangerous levels, especially in basements, crawl spaces and first floors. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after tobacco, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Reasons to measure radon in your company

1. Current regulatory compliance:

Royal Decree 1029/2021: Obliges companies to assess radon exposure in workplaces located in risk areas or with subway spaces. If levels exceed 300 Bq/m², corrective measures must be implemented to protect workers' health.
Technical Building Code (CTE) DB-HS6: Establishes that newly constructed buildings must incorporate preventive measures to limit radon concentration, especially in areas with high probability of accumulation.
Instruction IS-47, 09/04/2025, of the Nuclear Safety Council: Approves the list of municipalities prioritised for radon and establishes guidelines for measuring its concentration in the indoor air of workplaces located in them.

How many measurements do you need to make?

The minimum number of measurements will depend on the surface, height and distribution of the building. Basements and crawl spaces are the most susceptible areas, although the risk decreases in the upper floors, it is advisable to perform measurements as well.
Measurements should be performed under standard conditions, preferably during the heating season, when radon levels tend to be higher.
